Elementary OS (see latest progress on eOS), for those who aren’t familiar with its code name methodology, is naming its releases after mythological deities and beings.
Who is Freya?
Freya (or Freyja) is a Norse goddess of love and beauty who rules over her heavenly afterlife field.
Since Elementary OS is a design stimulated distro (focuses on always pushing its design forward), the Elementary team feels this association would make a lot of sense.
So… Why the Sudden Change?
Well, apparently there’s an active militant group in Iraq and Syria who’s also commonly known by the name “ISIS” – (Islamic State in Iraq and Syria).
As you can imagine, eOS team has no desire of being associated with that group or whatever it stands for, nor do they think anyone might get confused.
However, as Cassidy James puts it:
“we want to both recognize the ongoing turmoil and choose a less controversial name.”
Thus, the decision was made and the change is now officially in effect.
Closer to Beta
On another side note Cassidy doesn’t neglects to mention that the development of eOS is “still speeding along“, although not quite ready for a public beta yet its getting closer.
If you’re interested, you can track the progress via Launchpad, and of course donations will be much appreciated too.
